Bonnie Trash is a Canadian darkwave and post-punk duo from Ontario. A lifelong project of twin sisters, Emmalia and Sarafina Bortolon-Vettor. With their gothic and haunting style, they create soundtracks to the horror stories they want to tell, drawing inspiration from ancestral fear, death, folklore, and the sublime.
Much of Bonnie Trash’s first works centered on the stories told from their Nonna Maria. She is often the narrator, speaking in Veneto dialect. In Ezzelini’s Dead, Maria and her brother, Cesare, tell the story of Ezzelino da Romano III, who was a medieval cannibalistic tyrant in the family’s hometown of San Zenone degli Ezzelini.

Their debut album, Malocchio, was a collection of stories told about the Evil Eye while also documenting moving back and forth between Italy and Canada to revisit family and curses.
In Mourning You, the soundtrack changes to becoming more present, more sharp as the pair process the loss of Maria. Sonically, Bonnie Trash invoke the influences of Joy Division, Black Sabbath, and John Carpenter.

Con il loro stile gotico e funereo, creano colonne sonore per le storie horror che vogliono raccontare, traendo ispirazione dalla paura ancestrale dalla morte, dal folklore e dal sublime. I primi pezzi della band sono incentrati sulle storie raccontate dalla loro amata Nonna Maria. È Spesso proprio lei a narrare, in dialetto veneto. In Mourning You, la colonna sonora cambia diventando più presente, più acuta per la perdita della nonna Maria. Dal punto di vista sonoro, evocano i Joy Division, i Black Sabbath e John Carpenter.
How much of your personal experiences goes into your writing?
Quanto influenza esercita la vostra esperienza di vita nella scrittura dei pezzi?
Sara: From a songwriting and lyrical perspective, I write mostly in first person. This narrative choice helps me share my grief by becoming grief itself; through songwriting I get to share different versions of myself when I grieve. I take the power of my nightmares by becoming them.
Sara: Da una prospettiva di scrittura di canzoni e testi, scrivo principalmente in prima persona. Questa scelta narrativa mi aiuta a condividere il mio dolore diventando il dolore stesso; attraverso la scrittura riesco a condividere diverse versioni di me stessa, soprattutto il lutto. Emma: From a guitar perspective, I wanted to create a texture underneath every track and have it come alive with our start and end instrumental drones. I wanted it to represent that layer of darkness, the figure that lingers, reminding you that this person will never return to you. They are gone.
Emma: Per la chitarra, volevo creare una trama sotto ogni traccia e farla prendere vita con i nostri droni strumentali di intro e fine. Volevo che il suono rappresentasse quello strato di oscurità, come una figura sulla soglia, pronta a ricordarti che non tornerà mai più da te. Se n’è andata per sempre.

Mourning You is about the fear of watching a loved one dying and the fear in their eyes staring back. It is soundtracking grief as horror as we processed the death of our Nonna Maria. Mourning You is a sonic embodiment of how we processed grieving her. And for us, processing grief comes with building a supernatural entity to fear.
When you lose the one you love so dearly, it is a cut that is so deep. It rips your heart out of your chest. You try to continue on, but you suffer and you bleed. Each passing day, you are haunted by the regrets of what you could have done. Grief is like an open wound that will never fully heal. It can consume you if you let it. Sometimes, it’s best to let it feed, allowing the pain to exist with the beautiful memories you hold close to your heart.
Mourning You racconta la paura di vedere una persona cara morire, e della paura nei suoi occhi che ci fissano. È la colonna sonora del dolore come orrore. L’abbiamo scritto mentre elaboravamo la morte di Nonna Maria. Mourning You è un’incarnazione sonora di come abbiamo elaborato il lutto, creando un’entità soprannaturale da temere.
La perdita di una persona cara è una ferita profonda. Ti strappa il cuore dal petto. Cerchi di andare avanti, ma soffri e sanguini. Ogni giorno che passa, ti tormentano i rimpianti per ciò che avresti potuto fare. Il dolore non guarirà mai del tutto. Può consumarti se glielo permetti. Definitely Joy Division, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Sisters of Mercy, and The Cure.

How do you occupy your time when you’re not doing anything music related to inspire yourself musically?
Cosa fate quando vi occupate di musica?
Outside of music, we love horror films and absurdist theatre. Really, anything that compels a great story told. We are inspired by performances and productions that scare us and transport us into different worlds. It is very inspiring when a team of people get together to create a piece of work.
Al di fuori della musica, amiamo i film horror e il teatro dell’assurdo. In realtà, tutto ciò che spinge a raccontare una bella storia. Siamo ispirati da performance e produzioni che ci spaventano e ci trasportano in mondi diversi. È molto stimolante quando un team di persone si riunisce per creare un qualcosa insieme.
