Giada Maestra is an italian artist currently based in London, where she works as a freelance illustrator. The memories of Venice and Paris, where she lived for a while, deeply influenced most of her artwork, but London is the city of her professional growth. Giada express her interest and her curiosity for the feminine world thorough light pastel colors palettes and soft shapes, in both digital and paper. She tells us that her secret wishes are “to draw the New Yorker’s cover and to have a dog.”
Giada Maestra è un’artista italiana attualmente con sede a Londra, dove lavora come illustratrice freelance. Il ricordo di città come Venezia e Parigi, dove ha vissuto per qualche tempo, hanno profondamente influenzato gran parte dei suoi lavori, ma Londra è città della sua crescita professionale. Giada esprime il suo interesse e curiosità per il mondo femminile attraverso palette di colori pastello e forme morbide, sia in digitale che su carta. Ci racconta che i suoi sogni nel cassetto sono “illustrare la copertina del New Yorker e prendersi un cane”.
How and where did your journey begin on becoming a freelance illustrator?
Quando e dove è iniziato il tuo percorso per diventare un’illustratrice freelance?
I approchead illustration during my bachelor’s degree in Fashion Design in Venice. I immediately felt the need to deepen the study of drawing. I wanted to express freely myself to give a visual representation of what I felt mine. If think about my path, London had a great impact on my career, and now I can finally give the right amount of dedication to illustration.
Mi sono avvicinata all’illustrazione durante il mio corso di Laurea in Design della Moda a Venezia. Ho sentito da subito l’esigenza di approfondire lo studio del disegno; volevo esprimermi liberamente e dare una rappresentazione visuale a ciò che sentivo mio. Se penso al mio percorso, sicuramente il mio trasferimento a Londra ha avuto un forte impatto sulla mia carriera e ora posso finalmente dare la giusta dose di dedizione all’illustrazione.
Where do you get inspiration from for your illustrations?
Dove trovi l’ispirazione per le tue illustrazioni?
My illustrations mainly represent scenes of everyday life filtered by my mood. I like to tell stories about women and their bodies, sometimes the context is real, sometimes surreal. Through this process I explore not only my character’s psychology, but also mine.
I miei lavori sono per lo più scene di vita quotidiana filtrate dal mio stato d’animo del momento e dall’atmosfera che percepisco intorno a me. Mi piace raccontare storie di donne e dei loro corpi, qualche volta il contesto è reale, altre volte invece è surreale. Attraverso questo processo esploro non solo la psicologia dei miei personaggi, ma anche la mia.
When did you make the decision to focus on creating digital art?
Quando hai deciso di occuparti di Arte Digitale?
I have always been attracted by digital illustration. In fact, I follow several illustrators who use this medium, and they got me closer to this new technique. I always bring my iPad with me, so I can catch every moment of inspiration.
It’s not easy for a self taught illustrator to find the right style and technique. The journey is made of mistakes, change of directions and insecurities. I’m really proud to have overcome them by myself.
Sono sempre stata attratta dall’illustrazione digitale. Seguo vari illustratori che utilizzano questo tipo di strumento e che hanno contribuito a farmi avvicinare a questa nuova tecnica. Porto sempre con me il mio iPad, cosi posso catturare ogni momento di ispirazione.
Non è semplice raggiungere ed affinare un proprio stile per un’illustratrice autodidatta. Il percorso è fatto di errori, incertezze e cambi di direzione, ma la soddisfazione di aver fatto tutto da sola è impagabile.
Who are the artists that you admire or intrigue you and why?
Chi sono gli artisti che ammiri o che ti intrigano e perché?
I have a very long list, but the most significant three for me at the moment are: the swedish photographer Lina Scheynius, always source of my inspiration due to the subjects choosen in her art (mainly herself), her nudes, and shots full of emotions; the french-american illustrator and animator Pascal Campion, who’s the biggest storyteller to me, and his covers for the New Yorker make me dream; the american illustrator Molly Egan, for her sparkling and colorful palette.
Potrei fare una lista lunghissima, ma i tre al momento più significativi per me sono: la fotografa svedese Lina Scheynius, da sempre una mia grande fonte d’ispirazione per i soggetti scelti (per lo più se stessa), i suoi nudi e i suoi scatti carichi di emotività; l’illustratore e animatore franco-americano Pascal Campion, per me lo storyteller per eccellenza, le sue copertine per il New Yorker mi fanno sognare; l’illustratrice americana Molly Egan per la sua frizzantissima palette colori.
You live in London. Does the city influence and inspire your works?
Vivi a Londra. Questa città influenza e ispira i tuoi lavori?
Absolutely yes. As I’ve already said, there’re other cities that inspire me more from a stylistic point of view, nonetheless London influences me and my drawings everyday, with its contradictions and multiculturality.
I feel stimulated by londoners and their open minded lifestyle. London is full of people pushing ahead their projects and business, and this give you the chance of connect with people who feed your creativity.
Since I’m here I had the opportunity to meet people who are interested in my work and that support me. One example is this new startup for freelance creatives called Wishu, they contacted me through my Behance; also my private commissions have been improved and I manage an online store where you can buy different products with my drawings printed on.
Assolutamente si. Come ho già detto, ci sono città che dal punto di vista stilistico sono per me di maggiore ispirazione, ciò nonostante, Londra riesce ad influenzare ogni giorno i miei disegni con le sue contraddizioni e multiculturalità.
Mi sento stimolata dai londinesi e dal loro stile di vita è aperto e libero. Londra brulica di persone che portano avanti i progetti e i business più disparati e questo ti da la possibilità connetterti con persone che alimentano la tua creatività.
Da quando sono qui ho avuto l’opportunità di conoscere persone interessate al mio lavoro e che mi supportano. Un esempio è Wishu, una startup inglese per creativi freelance, che mi ha contattata tramite il mio profilo Behance; anche le mie commissioni private sono aumentate e da poco gestisco anche un negozio online dove si possono acquistare diversi prodotti con i miei disegni.
Do you listen to music while you are creating? If so, which artists do you find the most inspiring?
Ascolti musica mentre crei? Se si, che artisti ti ispirano maggiormente?
I always listen to music while I draw, it’s a crucial part of my creative process. I’m more inspired by the music genre rather than the artist, and the musical choice depends on my mood. In my playlist right now you can find Tame Impala, Brunori Sas, Far Caspian and Wild Nothing.
Ascolto sempre musica mentre disegno, è una delle parti fondamentali del mio processo creativo. Sono più ispirata dal genere piuttosto che dall’artista e la scelta musicale dipende molto dal mio umore. Nella mia playlist attuale puoi trovare Tame Impala, Brunori Sas, Far Caspian e Wild Nothing.
