Hope you guys like instrumental riffs and intimate monologues, because this band will take you into an introspective journey with dreamlike atmospheres. Dasia is an Italian trio formed in 2015 by Elettra Pizzale (bass, vocals), Luca Stocco (drums, samples) and Edgardo Mauroner (guitar, synth). They write and compose experimental songs, with references to alt-rock, post-rock and progressive. Mainly instrumental, they accompany some songs with monologues and quotes, creating a mix between avant-garde, psychedelia, noise and more intimate moments through their lyrics.
Speriamo vi piacciano i riff strumentali e i monologhi intimi perchè questa band vi porterà in un viaggio introspettivo immerso in atmosfere sognanti. I Dasia sono un trio del Friuli-Venezia Giulia formatosi nel 2015 dall’incontro di Elettra Pizzale (basso, voce), Luca Stocco (batteria, samples) ed Edgardo Mauroner (chitarra, synth). Scrivono e compongono canzoni dal genere sperimentale, con richiami all’alt-rock, post-rock e progressive. Principalmente strumentali, accompagnano alcuni brani con monologhi e citazioni, creando un mix tra avant-garde, psichedelia, noise e momenti più intimi attraverso i loro testi.
Can you give us an overview of the birth of the band and the name you have chosen?
Potete farci una panoramica sul nome e la nascita della band?
We formed in 2015; at the time we were already playing together in a project that also included a singer and a keyboard player. The band then broke up and we decided to continue with a new project. So we started composing and experimenting a bit and at the same time we were looking for a lead voice that suited us. Unfortunately, the undertaking proved a bit difficult and so we opted to remain instrumental, since it seemed that it worked well anyway and allowed us to experiment more. The first EP is in fact entirely instrumental while in the second studio work (DEL REGIME INVISIBILE // lizardrecords.it ) we decided to add the reciting voice.
The choice of name? We wanted to find a name that did not have a specific meaning, so as to let it be the music and not the name to create an idea of us. We therefore chose this name because by chance I came across a series of Celtic terms one day. So we thought that using a dead language for the band name could be effective and thus the name ‘Dasia’ was born.
However, there is a nice anecdote: in fact, we only discovered after choosing the name and creating the various social profiles that Dasia is actually also a personal name used in America. So we happened to be accidentally tagged in posts by people on the other side of the ocean, and all in all we enjoyed it.
Ci siamo formati nel 2015; all’epoca suonavamo già insieme in un progetto che comprendeva anche un cantante ed un tastierista. La band poi si sciolse e noi decidemmo di proseguire formando un nuovo progetto. Abbiamo iniziato così a comporre e sperimentare un po’ e nel contempo cercavamo una lead voice che si addicesse ai nostri gusti. Purtroppo l’impresa risultò un po’ ardua e così optammo per rimanere strumentali, dal momento che ci sembrava che la cosa funzionasse comunque bene e ci permetteva di sperimentare maggiormente. Il primo EP (omonimo) è infatti interamente strumentale mentre nel secondo lavoro in studio (DEL REGIME INVISIBILE // lizardrecords.it ) abbiamo deciso di aggiungere la voce recitata.
La scelta del nome? Volevamo trovare un nome che non avesse un significato troppo specifico, in modo da lasciare che fosse la musica e non il nome a creare un’idea di noi. Abbiamo scelto questo nome quando, per caso, ci siamo trovati di fronte ad una serie di termini celtici. Abbiamo pensato quindi che l’utilizzo di una lingua morta per il nome della band potesse essere efficace e così è nato il nome ‘Dasia’.
C’è tuttavia un aneddoto simpatico: scoprimmo infatti solo dopo aver scelto il nome e creato i vari profili social che in realtà Dasia è anche un nome di persona usato in America. Ci è capitato quindi di essere per sbaglio taggati in post di persone dall’altra parte dell’oceano e la cosa tutto sommato ci diverte.
What about your visual influences?
E cosa ci dite delle vostre influenze visuali?
Our influences are various, let’s say that any potential form of expression or source of inspiration is exploited, be it pictorial, musical, cinematographic etc …
Especially for this latest album we wanted to create a sort of complete work of art, which included not only the music but also the figurative side thanks to the use of custom-designed graphics for the various pieces. In fact, the entire artwork on the CD was taken care of down to the smallest detail by us together with Giuliano Cesco (one of our trusted collaborators) with the aim of explaining the demons that stir within the album through images. We have also created visuals that we project during our live performances to guide the listener even more on our spiritual journey with dreamlike implications.
Even the video clips (shot by Andrea Altran of FAO Studios) have been modeled around the songs, taking advantage of our cinema background. We mixed symbolic and dreamlike elements to entice the listener to observe a reality that is a little different and perhaps a little truer than what we usually experience, a cornerstone of the album itself.
Le nostre influenze sono varie, diciamo che qualsiasi potenziale forma di espressione o fonte di ispirazione viene sfruttata, che sia essa pittorica, musicale, cinematografica ecc…
Soprattutto per questo ultimo disco abbiamo voluto creare una sorta di opera d’arte a tutto tondo, che comprendesse non solo il lato musicale ma anche quello figurativo grazie all’utilizzo di grafiche disegnate su misura per i vari brani. L’intero artwork del CD infatti è stato curato nei minimi dettagli da noi assieme a Giuliano Cesco (un nostro fido collaboratore) con l’intento di spiegare attraverso le immagini i demoni che si agitano all’interno dell’album. Non solo, abbiamo ideato anche dei visual che proiettiamo durante le performance live per accompagnare ancora di più l’ascoltatore in questo nostro viaggio spirituale dai risvolti onirici.
Anche i videoclip (girati da Andrea Altran di FAO Studios) sono stati modellati attorno alle canzoni sfruttando un po’ quello che è il nostro background cinematografico. Abbiamo mescolato elementi simbolici ed onirici per invogliare l’ascoltatore ad osservare una realtà un po’ diversa e forse un po’ più vera di quella che viviamo solitamente, concetto cardine dell’album stesso.
What emotions do you want to arouse in the listeners?
Che emozioni volete suscitare negli ascoltatori?
Causing any type of emotion in the listener satisfies us, as long as it is true and sincere.
We realize that by now much of the music has already been written and it is now more and more difficult to please and satisfy those who listen to music, more and more attentive and looking for similarities rather than differences compared to the past.
We are therefore happy when a person simply tells us that they’ve felt something, it means that after all we have been able to convey some kind of message.
Music is the best vehicle to express what is stirring within us; in our songs there is everything: sadness, anger, disappointment, happiness and the hope is certainly that all this turmoil that is stirring in me will be able to come out and be perceived by the public; maybe someone can then be reflected in that emotion and find comfort in it.
Qualsiasi tipo di emozione da parte dell’ascoltatore ci appaga, purché essa sia vera e sincera.
Ci rendiamo conto che ormai gran parte della musica è già stata scritta ed è sempre più difficile accontentare e soddisfare gli ascoltatori, sempre più attenti alle somiglianze piuttosto che alle differenze con il passato .
Siamo contenti quando una persona arriva, magari dopo un concerto, e ci dice semplicemente: “mi avete emozionato”; significa che, dopotutto, quello che volevamo trasmettere è arrivato.
La musica è il miglior veicolo per esprimere ciò che si agita dentro di noi; nei nostri brani c’è tutto: tristezza, rabbia, delusione, felicità e la speranza è sicuramente che tutto questo tumulto che si agita in me riesca ad uscire fuori e venga percepito dal pubblico; magari qualcuno può rispecchiarsi poi in quell’emozione e trovarvi conforto.
How do you create a dreamy atmosphere, from your point of view?
Come si crea un’atmosfera sognante, dal vostro punto di vista?
A dreamy atmosphere is created if you are able to dream. Personally, we find more meaning in dreams than in everyday life, which in part tends to be a bit routine and superficial at times.
Giving free rein to what lurks inside our soul certainly allows us to reveal a more symbolic and dreamlike side in a song or in any artistic production.
Being able to look inside oneself and give freedom to one’s dreams or nightmares to come out allows us to express a more vulnerable side of us: this vulnerability becomes sincerity for the listener, who thus perceives the true side of ourselves.
Si crea un’atmosfera sognante se si è in grado di sognare. Personalmente trovo nei sogni più significati rispetto alla realtà di tutti i giorni, che in parte tende ad essere un po’ abitudinaria e superficiale a volte.
Dare libero sfogo a ciò che si annida dentro la nostra anima permette sicuramente di rivelare un lato più simbolico ed onirico in un brano o in una qualsiasi produzione artistica.
Essere in grado di guardare dentro sé stessi e dare libertà ai propri sogni o ai propri incubi di uscire allo scoperto permette di esprimere un lato di noi più vulnerabile: questa vulnerabilità diventa sincerità per l’ascoltatore, che percepisce così il vero lato di noi stessi.
Besides music, what other interests do you have?
A parte la musica, che altre passioni avete?
Each of us has his own life experiences and passions and we believe that every moment lived and every emotion felt inevitably influences the composition of a song.
(Elettra) Music is definitely the biggest and most important passion I have; it allows me to be free and be myself like nothing else. I am also very passionate about film and art, elements that I always try to include in video clips and album covers. Writing, on the other hand, is one of those passions that I would define more as a necessity in reality; I need it because it allows me to see myself in my fears and helps me a lot in understanding myself. Writing the lyrics for the band is nothing more than a natural and liberating process that completes the compositional process making it even more intimate.
Ciascuno di noi ha le sue esperienze di vita e le proprie passioni e crediamo che ogni momento vissuto ed ogni emozione provata influenzino inevitabilmente la composizione di un brano.
(Elettra) La musica è sicuramente la passione più grande ed importante che ho; mi permette di essere libera ed essere me stessa come nessun’altra cosa. Sono anche molto appassionata di film e di arte, elementi che cerco sempre di inserire nei videoclip e nelle copertine degli album. La scrittura invece è una di quelle passioni che definirei più una necessità in realtà; ne ho bisogno perché mi permette di specchiarmi nelle mie paure e mi aiuta molto nella comprensione di me stessa. Scrivere i testi per la band non è altro che un processo naturale e liberatorio che completa il processo compositivo rendendolo ancora più intimo.
