Kill Your Boyfriend is a psych/post-punk/darkwave/shoegaze duo from Treviso, Italy. Made up of Matteo Scarpa on guitar and vocals, and Antonio Angeli on drums, they formed in 2011 and have produced 4 albums to date. With their chilling rock’n roll style, they explore the dark side of human thoughts and desires. Are you ready to meet them?

I Kill Your Boyfriend sono un duo psych/post-punk/dark wave/ shoegaze di Treviso. La band, formatasi nel 2011, è composta da Matteo Scarpa alla chitarra e voce e da Antonio Angeli alla batteria. Ad oggi hanno fatto uscire 4 album, tutti marchiati da uno stile rock’n roll agghiacciante e capace di esplorare i pensieri più cupi dell’animo umano.

When and why did you start making music?

Quando e perché avete iniziato a suonare?

Matteo: Even knowing that music was part of me since I was a child, I started playing music very late during the University. Some friends pushed me to pick up an instrument when I was living in Padua. They needed a guitarist for a new band with the purpose of making original music.
Even if I didn’t know how to play even an instrument, I immediatewly understood that the time spent “making music” would be my reason for living. I haven’t stopped since then.

Antonio: I started playing music as a child: music has always fascinated and excited mea lot. One of the best days of me childhood is definitely the day my parents gave me the first drum kit.

Matteo: Pur sapendo che la musica era parte di me sin da piccolo, ho cominciato a suonare molto tardi, quando ormai ero maggiorenne. Fondamentali sono stati alcuni amici che mi hanno spinto a prendere in mano uno strumento, quando ancora abitavo a Padova. Avevano bisogno di un chitarrista per una band che stavano cercando di mettere su con lo scopo di far pezzi originali. Sebbene non sapessi suonare neanche uno strumento, a parte il classico “piffero” che ti insegnavano a scuola, subito capii che quel tempo passato a “fare musica”  sarebbe stata la mia ragione di vita. Da allora non ho più smesso.

Antonio: Ho cominciato a suonare da piccolo: mi ha sempre affascinato ed emozionato la musica. Uno dei giorni più belli della mia infanzia è sicuramente il giorno in cui i miei genitori mi fecero trovare a casa la mia prima batteria.

What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

Quali sono le band e gli stili musicali che vi hanno influenzato? Cosa ascoltate al giorno d’oggi?

We have always tried not to fossilize on a single musical genre or style, and we hope that this can be listened in our works. Undoubtedly we have all the post-punk/no wave roots, having consumed the records of classic artists such as: Suicide, The Jesus and Mary Chains, Joy Division, Velvet Underground and there would be many others to be counted.

As for our current ratings, the bands that we use to listen to during our van trips are: A place to Bury Strangers, The Underground Youth, Low, Viagra Boys, Idles, Sleaford Mods and many others. However we are always hungry for new music and therefore we are always looking for new bands to listen to.

Abbiamo sempre cercato di non fossilizzarci su un unico genere o stile musicale, e speriamo che questo si evinca dai nostri lavori. Indubbiamente le radici post punk/no wave le abbiamo tutte, avendo consumato, da giovani i dischi di artisti quali: Suicide, The Jesus and Mary Chains, Joy Division, Velvet Underground e ce ne sarebbero molti altri da annoverare. Per quanto riguarda i nostri ascolti attuali, le band che più girano in autoradio durante i nostri viaggi in furgone sono: A place to Bury Strangers, The Underground Youth, Low, Viagra Boys, Idles, Sleaford Mods. Comunque siamo sempre famelici di nuove sonorità e quindi ricerchiamo sempre nuove band da ascoltare.

You work a lot with concept albums; are all your albums separate concept albums or do they tell one bigger story together?

Lavorate molto sui concept dei vostri album; sono tutte idee separate o cercate di raccontare una storia unica attraverso l’insieme di tutti gli album?

The first three albums “Kill Your Boyfriend (S / T)” (2013) – “The King is Dead” (2015) – “Killadelica“ (2020) are linked together as they are based on a pun between the name of the band and the song titles that relate to murderers or victims from different points of view.

So, while the first two albums feature songs titled with male names, as a sort of hypothetical list of “boyfriends” to be killed, the third that closes this circle instead presents songs with female proper names of black widows who actually existed or taken from stories of fantasy.

The new album “Voodoo” out on October 14th for LittleCloud Records (US), Sister9 Recordings (UK) and Shyrec (ITA) instead presents a completely separate concept. Taking a cue from Micheal Ventura’s essay “Hear that Long Snake Moan” which described the correlation between the live performance of rock’n roll artists and the possession by spirits during Voodoo rites, we had the idea of ​​creating an album with two faces: side A with a decadent rock’n roll atmosphere, in which each song is dedicated to an artist (we leave it to you to find who we are referring to!) while on B side we have translated into music what for us it is a long lysergic ritual.

I primi tre album “Kill Your Boyfriend (S / T)” (2013) – “The King is Dead“ (2015) – “Killadelica“ (2020) sono collegati tra loro in quanto basati su un gioco di parole tra il nome della band e i titoli delle canzoni che riguardano assassini o vittime da diversi punti di vista.

Così, mentre i primi due album presentano brani intitolati con nomi maschili, come una sorta di ipotetico elenco di “fidanzati” da uccidere, il terzo che chiude questo cerchio presenta invece brani con nomi propri femminili di vedove nere realmente esistite o tratte da storie di fantasia.

Il nuovo album “Voodoo”, in uscita il 14 Ottobre per LittleCloud Records (US), Sister9 Recordings (UK) e Shyrec (ITA), invece, presenta un concept a sé stante.

L’album prende spunto dal saggio di Micheal Ventura, “Hear that Long Snake Moan”, in cui viene descritta la correlazione tra la performance live di artisti rock’n roll e la possessione da parte di spiriti durante i riti Voodoo. Da qui è nata l’idea di creare un album con due facce: il lato A con un atmosfera rock’n roll decadente, in cui ogni brano è dedicato ad un artista (lasciamo a voi la ricerca a chi ci riferiamo!) mentre nel lato B abbiamo tradotto in musica quello che per noi è un lungo rituale lisergico.

You have been active in the post-punk scene for a really long time now. What kind of a changes do you see in the “alternative community”?

Siete attivi nella scena post-punk da molto ormai. Che tipo di cambiamenti percepite nella “comunità alternativa”?

The pandemic did not facilitate the natural growth of the alternative scene that we saw expanding until 2020 from various points of view. Surely a dramatic thing was the trail of clubs that unfortunately had to close during the last two years.

There has certainly been a recovery now, even if we continue to have uncertain news about the future and we can never rest assured.

We were lucky enough to be able to do a European tour last year before the last lockdown and we noticed just how in the “alternative scene” there was the desire to restart where everything had stopped, with almost greater enthusiasm and renewed strength.

Sicuramente la pandemia non ha facilitato la naturale crescita della scena alternativa che vedevamo in espansione fino al 2020 sotto vari punti di vista e la scia di locali che purtroppo hanno dovuto chiudere durante gli ultimi due anni è stata una cosa drammatica.
Ora certamente vi è una ripresa, anche se si continuano ad avere notizie incerte relative al futuro e non si può mai stare tranquilli.
Noi abbiamo avuto la fortuna di poter fare un tour europeo anche l’anno scorso prima dell’ultimo lockdown e notavamo proprio come nella “scena alternativa” ci fosse la voglia di riprendere da dove tutto si era fermato, con quasi maggiore entusiasmo e rinnovate forze.

Can you tell me one of the most dreadful moments you have had as a band?

Uno dei momenti più paurosi che avete vissuto come band?

Several moments of fear have occurred over the years and of various kinds. We can count among the worst horror nightmares a night trip in which it was pouring from the Albanian border to Tirana without car insurance for countries extra EEC (because the office was closed at the border); fights outside the clubs where you have just played without the possibility of leaving the venue until morning; and also an attempted theft of Matteo’s wallet in Berlin during a walk in the day off. And these are just the sweetened versions: we also experienced non-reportable splatter scenes, since we’re on the subject.

Di momenti di paura ne sono successi svariati durante gli anni e di varia natura. Possiamo annoverare tra i peggiori incubi horror un viaggio di notte in cui diluviava dal confine albanese fino a Tirana senza assicurazione della macchina per i paesi extra CEE (perché l’ufficio al confine era chiuso); risse fuori dai locali dove si è appena suonato senza la possibilità di lasciare la venue fino al mattino; e anche un tentato furto del portafoglio di Matteo durante una passeggiata a Berlino in day-off. E queste sono solo le versioni edulcorate: abbiamo anche vissuto scene splatter, visto che siamo in tema, che però è meglio non riportare.

What genre of horror movie is your favorite? (psycho-triller/splatter/gothic…) What is your favorite horror movie?

We are truly lovers of the “old” Italian Horror genre and we naturally refer to masters such as Pupi Avati, Dario Argento, Mario Bava. We have always been fascinated by these directors for the virtuous use of the camera/photography and the superb ability to create anxiety in the viewer.

Films such as “The house with laughing windows” (Matteo’s favorite Horror film) or “Deep red” (Antonio’s favorite Horror film) are milestones in world cinema, despite not having had stellar budgets for production.

Noi siamo veramente amanti del “vecchio” genere Horror italiano e ci riferiamo naturalmente ai maestri quali Pupi Avati, Dario Argento e Mario Bava. Ci hanno sempre affascinato di questi registi l’uso virtuoso della telecamera/fotografia e la superba capacità di creare ansia nello spettatore. Film quali “La casa dalle finestre che ridono” (film Horror preferito da Matteo) o “Profondo rosso” (film Horror preferito di Antonio) sono pietre miliari della cinematografia mondiale, pur non avendo avuto a disposizione budget stellari per la produzione.
