Agnese Guido is a storyteller.
Her work narrates existential, material and emotional dynamics with an intuitive approach and a surreal exploration of reality, showing intimate human reactions through symbols, poetic visions and dark humor. Her work ranges from tempera on paper and oil painting, to ceramic and papier-mâché.

What made you want to become an artist?
Cosa ti ha spinto a diventare un artista?
As a child I saw many paintings in museums thanks to my family, I remember in particular the Uffizi Gallery in Florence where I probably had a fantastic overdose of painting in the infinite rooms of the gallery.
Also at my grandmother’s house I remember that there was a painting depicting a clown, one of those paintings by unknown and of little value authors, a bit like the paintings and prints of crying children that are found at the flea market.
I was fascinated and scared of it at the same time, it had that slightly Lynchian charm, (although I didn’t know who Lynch was obviously until I saw twin peaks). He showed me a melancholy and intimate universe of someone who can not help but be himself, a clown on a stage, the dark background, he illuminated by a light, as suddenly discovered and laid bare.
Perhaps art, I believe, has this power.
Da bambina ho visto tanti quadri nei musei grazie alla mia famiglia, ricordo in particolare gli Uffizi a Firenze dove probabilmente ho avuto una fantastica overdose di pittura tra le infinite sale della galleria. Inoltre a casa di mia nonna ricordo che c’era un dipinto raffigurante un pagliaccio, uno di quei dipinti di autori sconosciuti e di poco valore, un po’ come i dipinti e stampe dei bambini che piangono che si trovano al mercatino delle pulci. Ne ero affascinata e spaventata allo stesso tempo, aveva quel fascino un po’ lynchiano, (anche se non sapevo chi fosse Lynch ovviamente fino a quando non ho visto twin peaks). Mi mostrava un ‘universo malinconico e intimo di chi non può far altro che essere se stesso, un pagliaccio su di un palco, lo sfondo scuro, lui illuminato da una luce, come scoperto all’improvviso e messo a nudo.
Forse l’arte credo, ha questo potere.
If you could work within a past art movement, which would it be?
Se potessi lavorare all’interno di un movimento artistico del passato, quale sarebbe?
I think I could have been a surrealist. I definitely have a predisposition to puns, to wander into the unconscious and to play with the hidden links between ideas and things.
I also imagine myself as an amanuensis monk in the Middle Ages to tell strange ideological stories, or as Bruegel, an artist I love, to represent the reality of the time in minute detail … and instead it’s me in 2022, and in fact I try to act however in the same way, telling.
Credo il surrealismo. Ho decisamente una predisposizione ai giochi di parole, a vagare nell’inconscio e a giocare con i legami nascosti tra le idee e le cose.
Mi immagino anche come un monaco amanuense nel medioevo a raccontare strane storie ideologiche, o come Bruegel, artista che amo, a rappresentare la realtà dell’epoca con minuzia di particolari…e invece sono io nel 2022, e in effetti cerco di agire comunque allo stesso modo, raccontando.
How would you comment on today’s art scene in Italy?
Come commenteresti la scena artistica di oggi in Italia?
The art scene today, like years ago, is very lively and interesting. Lately, perhaps the internet and social media have changed and approved visions and languages, but at the same time it allows us to grow faster.
La scena oggi, come anni fa, è molto vivace e interessante. Ultimamente forse internet e i social hanno cambiato e omologato le visioni e i linguaggi, ma allo stesso tempo permette di crescere più velocemente.
What personality trait do you have that has been most helpful in your art career?
Quale tratto della tua personalità ti è stato più utile nella tua carriera artistica?
Probably tenacity and self-criticism. But in the end, I think what matters is working hard and not thinking about your career, but pursuing your own research regardless of how things go and being yourself.
Probabilmente la tenacia e l’autocritica. Ma alla fine quello che conta credo sia lavorare tanto e non pensare alla carriera, ma portare avanti la propria ricerca indipendentemente da come vanno le cose ed essere se stessi.
What does your work aim to say?
Cosa vuoi dire con il tuo lavoro?
Sometimes it seems to me that I am constructing a rebus, but I try to tell what I see, what I live. My work means many things, but sometimes it’s stupid to have an opinion on everything, you can only live, hear and tell, how the leaves fall, how the hours pass, how the moods change.
There are recurring elements in my imagination, such as skyscrapers or city buildings, smoking factories, streets, cigarettes and various objects, human beings are few and sometimes absent, represented more according to what they represent than according to what they are.
A volte mi sembra di costruire rebus, ma cerco di raccontare quello che vedo, che vivo. Il mio lavoro vuole dire tante cose, ma a volte è stupido avere un opinione su tutto, si può solo vivere sentire e raccontare, di come cadono le foglie, come passano le ore, come cambiano gli umori.
Ci sono elementi ricorrenti nelle mio immaginario, come i grattacieli o palazzi delle città, fabbriche fumanti, strade, sigarette e oggetti vari, gli esseri umani sono pochi e a volte assenti, rappresentati più in base a ciò che rappresentano che in base a ciò che sono.
Which zodiac sign are you? Do you think that your birth chart influences your art?
I’m a Leo, Sagittarius rising! The sun blinded me, in fact my favorite color is yellow, even if I always wear black! I think the horoscope is a game, an ancient magic, but I don’t give too much importance to it except as a fascination, a code for actors, symbols, coincidences.
Sono del segno del Leone, ascendente Sagittario! Probabilmente il sole mi ha accecato, infatti il mio colore preferito è il giallo, ma vesto sempre di nero! Penso che l’oroscopo sia un gioco simbolico, un’antica magia, ma non gli attribuisco tanta importanza se non come una fascinazione, un codice per interpretare coincidenze.
